3rd Grade and Matisse

3rd graders have been working on the element of art, space. We learned how to identiy positive and negative space in an artwork. Then, we learned about the artwork of Henri Matisse. Can you identify the positive and negative space in this artwork by Matisse?

Matisse suffered from an illness in his 70s that caused him to have to stay in a wheelchair much of the time. He struggled to paint, so he cut paper instead. He made whole books of paper collages using positve and negative space. He even designed stained glass windows for a church using his collage method.
